My father in law is really trying to inspire us to move to Woodbury. I know the weather is REALLY COLD compared to California, but when we figured we could afford to buy a house there, when we can't really afford to make rent in CA, we are seriously considering relocation.
What would you say the pros & cons of living in Minnesota are?

Re: relocating
Wed, November 30, 2005 - 9:52 AMYes, it is cold. So cold that I leave for the winter.
But when I did live here for 9 years I enjoyed this stuff:
More greenspace/parkspace in MPLS than anywhere else in the country (I'm not sure how Portland fits in w/ its' big ole park)
Good Schools
Good Economy (the jobs aren't really that hard to find)
MSP now has the highest per capita of bicycle commuters in the nation (that's year round too... fuck the winter)
Lotsa Co-op Grocery stores -fuck WholeFoods
The summers are AMAZING!
Things I didn't enjoy so much,
Some lack of Diversity--- esp. in Woodbury. Not so much in Minneapaultown
The bitter cold-yet it can provide for months of heavily creative time when hibernating/hiding from the winter.
Myspace is the preferred local on-line community---fuck myspace
Minnesota Nice- nice to your face, but secretly self conscious/afraid of offending, and will curse you the moment you turn away.
If you can... live in the city. The suburbs are scary/sad places.
So after 9 years, I am really ready to not live here anymore. But it is still home. But that's my own trip/journey.
Good Luck!

Re: relocating
Wed, November 30, 2005 - 4:38 PMMy father in law is kind of doing the choosing of the house, so I'm pretty screwed as far as suburbia. I'm so excited to be somewhere with co-op grocery stores.
I would love to have the winter to write. I have no inspiration in my current fishbowl. -

Re: relocating
Tue, December 6, 2005 - 10:27 AMi have kind of worried about that. what do you do to prevent the winter cabin fever? -
-
Re: relocating
Tue, December 6, 2005 - 9:54 PMOh please, it's not that bad. Usually it is sunny here during the winter, making it totally bearable. The cold is no problem once you get used to it, and learn how to dress. Only part about the winter here that I don't like is the dry air.
However, in the spring, summer and fall it is very nice and mild here. For a couple of weeks in the summer it can be 95+, but what other place can you live that has such a swing? It can go from -10 to 110 in six months.
Minneaplois and Saint Paul are rather progressive and have a great music and arts culture. We have a raft of restaurants, museums, theaters and shops. There is a good job market, and we are starting to be more responsible about transportation. We also have a lot of lakes and parks within the metro area.
If you are truly worried about Cabin Fever (don't be) or it's cousin, Seasonal Affective Disorder, you can use a Full-Spectrum light or just embrace the winter. Learn how to: ice skate, cross-country ski, ice fish, or make snow men. -

Re: relocating
Sat, December 10, 2005 - 1:40 PMI can't wait to skate again, ski again, take the little person in my life on a sled! Snow is my favorite substance in the world now that I'm straight edge.
It's just going to be a weather shock. To give you an example, when it dropped down to 60 my son asked me for mittens.
I'm chomping at the bit to get out of this surreal fishbowl and get somewhere a little less fake. -

Re: relocating
Wed, February 1, 2006 - 9:24 AMWoodbury. Apparently I've married into Woodbury folklore of sorts. There's a Volin lane - or something. They introduced tobacco to the state fair. Ironic since I'm so proud of myself for quitting - or mostly quitting anyhow.
I'd really like to get to see more of St Paul. I might get my cousin to show me around this Saturday.
Is everyone really as nice as they seem, or is everyone just waiting til my guard is down to try to get me to go "ice fishing" to watch the ice crack under me?
